Music Notes – February 2019

We begin February with Confirmation by the Bishop of Lichfield and I am proud to report that ne fewer than 7 choristers have asked to receive the sacrament. Over the years the majority of children coming to Confirmation have come from the Choir which shows that, as well as providing a very fine musical education, the Choir is a source of nurturing the faith in young people. I wish them well on this very special day in their lives.

Visiting Choir

Sunday 17th February is the school half term and as a number of choristers will be away our services will be led by a visiting choir. The St. Christopher Chorale, who sang here last year, are returning and I hope that everyone will give them support at both the Parish Eucharist and Choral Evensong. In the morning the Chorale will be singing the service to Wood’s setting ‘in the Phrygian Mode’ known affectionately as ‘Wood in the fridge’ to church musicians. In the evening they will sing Walmisley’s setting in D major. His D minor setting is a favourite with our choir and I am looking forward to hearing this setting which I don’t know.

CD of favourite hymns

The Choir will be recording its 4th CD later this year and this will be a CD of favourite hymns. If you would like your favourite hymn to be on the CD you can do so by sponsoring it for £10. There will be sponsorship forms on the table at the South door and on the music pages of the web-site from the beginning of February.

The Friends of the Music

May I remind you that membership forms for the Friends of the Music are now available on the table by the South Door and on the music pages of the web-site.

By becoming a member you help to maintain and develop our flourishing choral tradition. In addition you will receive generous discounts for concerts and other events put on by the Choir or our Chamber Choir ‘The Scholars and Gentlemen’ and we will put on a special musical event for Friends and Friends will also be able to take part in the various Choir social events that take place during the year.

Membership can be had by making a donation of minimum £18 (£12 for OAPs and the unwaged). Please make cheques out to St. Oswald’s P.C.C. and write Friends of the Music on the reverse. If you would like us to collect Gift Aid on your donation please use one of the blue envelopes in the pews.

Chorister vacancies

We have spaces in the Choir for young people giving them a chance to obtain a first class musical training in one of the best church choirs in the diocese.
