Music Notes – January 2019

A Happy New Year / Epiphany Carols

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy new year, to thank you for your support of the music in the past and assure you that that we will do our best to enrich our services with fine music of all genres in the coming year.

The Choir returns from its Christmas holidays on 6th January straight into the last of our three carol services – the Epiphany Carol Service. This service mirrors the three Epiphany themes of the coming of the Wise Men, the Baptism of Christ and the wedding feast at Cana and features some lesser known traditional English carols as well as many much loved old favourites. Do join us for what should be

a fitting end to the Christmas season.

The return of the Friends

Last year we renamed the Friends of the Music, ‘the St. Oswald’s Choral Foundation’ in order to avoid confusion with plans to set up a Friends of St. Oswald’s. However, the Friends of St. Oswald’s did not get off the ground and, at the same time, the numbers becoming members of the new Choral Foundation dropped, probably because people did not connect it with the old ‘Friends of the Music’. As there is no Friends of St. Oswald’s I am going to revert to the more familiar title of ‘Friends of the Music at St. Oswald’s’ and hope that you will want to become a member and support the music in the church. Although separate the account will remain within the Church which will allow us to collect Gift Aid on donations for those who wish to use this facility.

By becoming a member you help to maintain and develop our flourishing choral tradition. I also want to make the membership more attractive so in addition to receiving generous discounts for concerts and other events put on by the Choir or our Chamber Choir ‘The Scholars and Gentlemen’ we will put on a special musical event for Friends and Friends will also be able to take part in the various Choir social events that take place during the year.

Membership can be had by making a donation of minimum £18 (£12 for OAPs and the unwaged). Please make cheques out to St. Oswald’s P.C.C. and write Friends of the Music on the reverse. If you would like us to collect Gift Aid on your donation please use one of the blue envelopes in the pews.

Membership forms will be at the back of the church from the beginning of January or on the music pages of the Church web-site.

News of the Choir

I am, of course writing this well before Christmas to meet the Magazine publication deadline but already I know that Samantha Lewis and Hannah Boulton will be joining us for the Christmas services once they return from their first term at University. It’s great to know that once choristers have moved on in life that they still want to return on the occasions when they are at home and we look forward to welcoming them back.

Chris and Frances Nex’s daughter Jenny and granddaughter Lucy will also be visiting over Christmas and will be singing with us so we welcome them too and look forward to having an enhanced Choir for the Christmas services.

Many of you will have noticed that Abbi Grainger who was Head Chorister until she left for University has been on our prayer list for some weeks. She has been in hospital with a general sepsis but I am delighted to say that she is now fully recovered and will be returning to her final year of studies. Thanks to all those who offered prayers for her.

Chorister vacancies

The beginning of the New Year is a good time to start singing and we are looking for both boys and girls to join the Choir. This is a chance for young people to obtain a first class musical training in one of the best church choirs in the diocese. Children will join a really friendly and supportive group of young people and have the unique experience of singing in varied musical styles from very modern to before the Norman Conquest. For further information look at the music pages of the Church web-site or have a word with me after any service or by telephoning 01691 649933 or e-mailing

We also have Chorister Scholarships available at Oswestry School; see the article elsewhere in this edition of the magazine.

Mike Donkin

Director of Music.
