Music Notes – April 2018

This has been a great term as far as music is concerned with the highlight being Harvey’s Installation service. Now we end the term and begin the month with the Church’s great feast of Easter and as you would expect a feast of music. As has become traditional we will sing the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah at the Festival Eucharist. At Evensong we are preparing a special celebration with most of the music coming from the Italian High Renaissance. As well as having Gerry on the organ we shall be joined by an instrumental quartet of 2 violins, cor anglais and bassoon to provide a really joyous occasion. Do join us in what I hope will be a fitting close to the feast of the Resurrection.

Dates for the diary.

You may remember that when Samantha Lewis took her Associate exam of Trinity College she gave a recital as a dress rehearsal. Now Head Chorister, Chelsea Morris is preparing for the ATCL and Sam wants to take her Licentiate’s exam (LTCL) before she takes up her place at the Birmingham Conservatoire in September. The exams will be in early July so Chelsea and Sam will give a recital of both programmes on Sunday 24th June at 3.00pm. Do please come along and support them. I guarantee that you will be out in time to attend Evensong.

The fact that these young ladies have progressed so far in their music is down to the wonderful training that they received from Veronica during her time at St. Oswald’s. It seems hard to believe that this year will be the fourth since her death and, once again, we will be remembering her and her service at this church with a Memorial Organ Recital on Saturday 30th June. This year the recital will be given by Nigel Argust, Sub-organist of Lichfield Cathedral. Please put the date in your diary and join me to remember this lady.

There is no charge for either recital but we will take retiring collections for the music at St. Oswald’s.

Choir at Lichfield Cathedral

The choir will be singing Evensong in Lichfield Cathedral on Saturday 26th May and, as in previous years we will hire a coach to take us there and back. If you would like to join us for the day please sign the list which will be on the table by the South Door after Easter. We shall leave Park Gates at 12 noon arriving at Lichfield by 2.00pm. Evensong is at 5.30pm and the coach will depart straight after the service so we should back in Oswestry by 8.00pm at latest. Places on the coach are £12 each.

Adopt a Chorister

Singing consistently to a standard that you would expect to hear in our cathedrals and collegiate churches does not come without a lot of hard work and dedication. One of the keystones of our Choir training year is the annual summer school at Kingswood School, Bath. The choristers receive a week of intensive training from some of the top choir trainers and voice coaches in the country and they sing the Friday, Saturday and Sunday services in the fabulous setting of Bath Abbey.

This year we hope to have more choristers than ever attending and so, at £400 per chorister we have to raise a considerable sum to make this possible. We are, therefore, opening our ‘Adopt a Chorister’ Scheme. If you would like to help us maintain the high standard of choral music at St, Oswald’s please think about making a contribution. Any donation however small will help and will be very much appreciated.

Thank you all again for the support that you give which means such a lot to us. After Easter the Choir will have a two week break and then will be back for another term of singing God’s praises.

Mike Donkin

Director of Music.
