Music Notes – July 2017

The Veronica Donkin Memorial Organ Recital

The annual organ recital in memory of Veronica will be on Saturday 1st July at 7.30pm. This year it is being given by our own Organist, Gerry Howe. Gerry’s programme will have something to suit all tastes including music by Boellmann and, of course. J. S. Bach.

There is no charge for entry but a retiring collection will be taken to support the music at St. Oswald’s.

Having listened to some of the rehearsals I can say with confidence that we are all in for a huge treat. As in past years we will have a video screen so that you can watch Gerry at the console as well as listen.

Please come along to honour the memory of Veronica, who did so much towards the restoration of our beautiful organ as well as for church music at St. Oswald’s in general, to hear our wonderfully restored organ in its full glory and of course, to have an enjoyable evening in the company of our current organist, Gerry Howe.

Royal School of Church Music Summer School

The annual Summer School runs from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th August in the beautiful city of Bath. This year we have 8 choristers attending and additionally, the Head Chorister on the course is Abbi Grainger who was Head Chorister here at St. Oswald’s until she left to study law at Birmingham University two years ago.

This year the RSCM has decided to appoint a Pastoral Officer to look after the junior choristers and they have invited out present Head Chorister, Chelsea Morris, to undertake this role. It is a source of pride that for the last five years choristers from St. Oswald’s have taken leading roles in the course either as Head Chorister (Charlotte Edwards and Abbi) or as Team Leaders.

The choristers have a week of intense voice training from some of the finest voice coaches in the country and, as ever, will sing the Friday, Saturday and Sunday services in the fabulous setting of Bath Abbey. If you can manage to get to Bath during the weekend you can be sure of a real treat and the choristers will be delighted to receive your support.

Adopt a Chorister

I am grateful to all those who have contributed to the Adopt a Chorister Scheme. There is still time to receive donations and if you would like to help please let me have a cheque made out to St. Oswald’s Parish Church and write Music Foundation on the back. We are most grateful for any donation, however small, that helps us maintain the high standard of choral music at St. Oswald’s.

Nex Family Music on Saturday 22nd July

Please note the following from Chris Nex:-

To continue our occasional series of Saturday afternoon tea concerts, we are planning one for Saturday 22nd July from 3.00pm to 5.00pm in the Parish Centre. This time there will be songs and instrumental music chosen from repertoire that has been performed by family members over five generations. This includes part songs from my grandfather’s collection and pieces that have featured in family recitals over more recent times. The instruments used will include those made by family members, and for them specifically; this includes early as well as modern forms of the violin, which will be available to examine closely. We continue to explore repertoire with local connections, as well as those by neglected composers of the past, in addition to favourites like Rossini’s Cats’ duet and pieces by Purcell and Beethoven.

There will be no charge, but there will be a collection to support the MIND, the mental health charity.

Mike Donkin  -  Director of Music
