News of the Choir

First Communions

I am delighted to report that a number of our choristers were the first children to benefit from the new arrangements which allow children from 7 years of age to receive Holy Communion. Five choristers made their first communion on Sunday 21st May. Congratulations to Myles and Ella Wilkinson, Alice Williams, Aoife Brennan and Eleri Roberts. I believe that this will give them greater and more meaningful involvement in the Eucharist and look forward to their continuing in their faith and receiving Confirmation at a later date.

Voces8

Voces8 is now established as one of the world's most versatile and best-loved singing groups. Touring extensively throughout Europe, North America and Asia, the ensemble performs a repertory from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary commissions and arrangements.

The Choristers with Voces8 after the concert in Holy Trinity Church

On Friday 12th May they performed in Oswestry as part of the Oswestry School Recital Series and additionally ran a workshop for our choristers and the choristers from Oswestry School Chamber Choir. Ten of our choristers attended the workshop and had an amazing time working with the group using their innovative training methods. The choristers then attended the concert in the evening which featured everything from Byrd and Palestrina to Nat King Cole and Van Morrison. I am grateful to the various teachers who allowed the choristers to have leave of absence to take part in this unique experience.

Adopt a Chorister

My thanks to those who have already contributed to our Adopt a Chorister Scheme to raise money to send the choristers to the Royal School of Church Music Summer School in Bath. This year we have 9 choristers enrolled which means that, even taking advantage of an early bird booking at £375 per chorister we need to raise £3,375.

The scheme is still open and we are most grateful for all donations, however small.

Visiting Choir

The Choir of the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle - upon -Tyne is making a music tour in Shropshire and will join us for the morning service on Sunday 25th June when they will sing with our Choir. Following the service they will give a 30 minute recital in the Parish Centre, so do please join us for coffee plus entertainment and support these young people in their music making.

The Veronica Donkin Memorial Organ Recital

The annual organ recital in memory of Veronica will be on Saturday 1st July at 7.30pm. This year it is being given by our own Organist, Gerry Howe. Gerry’s programme will have something to suit all tastes including music by Boellmann and, of course. J. S. Bach.

There is no charge for entry but a retiring collection will be taken to support the music at St. Oswald’s.

Do put the date in your diary and come along to remember Veronica Donkin, Joint Director of Music and Organist of this church from 2000 to 2014 and to have an enjoyable evening with Gerry at our wonderful Hill Organ.

Mike Donkin  -  Director of Music
