Music Notes – March 2019

Kim Burgess.

Many of you will know that, as well as being Head Chorister, Kim is a keen rugby player. What people probably don’t know is that underneath her cassock and surplice Kim was often in her rugby kit and headed straight out from the morning service to do battle on the pitch, returning for Evensong bearing the scars of battle.

Sadly for us, Kim has now been selected to play for the County team and this means that she will have to be available for her sport on many Sundays. Regrettably, therefore, she has had to leave the Choir as fulfilling both commitments is not possible. My thanks to Kim for the service she has given since joining the Choir from one of our ‘Be a Chorister for a day’ events in 2012 and particularly for her service last year and this as Head Chorister. We will be sorry to see her go but wish her well in her chosen sport and look forward to perhaps seeing her in the England squad in due course.

A new Head Chorister will be appointed shortly and I will give notice of this in next month’s magazine.

Chorister vacancies

With the loss of any chorister we create vacancies in the Choir and are looking for young people from 8 years of age upwards who love to sing and would benefit from the first class musical training on offer. The Royal School of Church Music’s ‘Voice for Life’ scheme is specially designed to nurture and develop young voices by giving boys and girls the techniques and skills that they need to produce a good sound without damaging the voice. Whatever a young person wants to sing be it classical, jazz or pop our training programme will give them the skills to use the voice well. They may even develop a taste for church music encompassing as we do all genres from music written before the Norman Conquest to music written especially for us in the last two years.

For further information look at the music pages of the Church web-site or have a word with me after any service or by telephoning 01691 649933 or e-mailing mvdonkin@aol.com

CD of favourite hymns

The Choir will be recording its 4th CD later this year and this will be a CD of favourite hymns. If you would like your favourite hymn to be on the CD you can do so by sponsoring it for £10. Sponsorship forms are available on the table at the South door and on the music pages of the web-site.

News of the Choir

Congratulations to Chelsea Morris who has been given an unconditional offer to study for a BA (Hons) degree in Music at the University of Chichester. Chelsea joined the Choir at the age of seven and progressed through the ‘Voice for Life’ training gaining the coveted Gold Award. She became Head Chorister and last year having gained her Associate Diploma from Trinity College of Music (ATCL), was appointed Assistant Choir Trainer. She will commence her studies in September and once more will have a vacancy in the choir (see above)

Congratulations also to Ethan Cheetham who was formally admitted into the Choir last month and to the following choristers who passed their RSCM chorister exams:-

  • Junior Singer (Light Blue ribbon) Gabby Langford and Paul Sissons
  • Senior Singer (Dark Blue ribbon) Ella Wilkinson
  • Full Chorister (Red ribbon) Alice Wiilaims and Myles Wilkinson.
