News of the Choir

Samantha Lewis

Last month I reported on the recital that Sam gave as part of her preparation for her ATCL (Associate of Trinity College of Music, London) exam. I echo the words of the Vicar two Sundays ago that I am not surprised but delighted to tell you that she passed her exam with Distinction. Once she has finished her veterinary nursing degree Sam is hoping to study singing and conducting either at the Royal Northern College of Music or the Birmingham Conservatoire. Meanwhile we continue to benefit from her presence working with the junior choir and of course enjoying her wonderful voice both in solo singing and ensemble.

Abigail Grainger

It was good to welcome Abbi, an ex-Head Chorister here at St. Oswald’s back from University to sing with us for the Easter services. Abbi has been invited to be Head Chorister on the Bath Summer School this year. Previously Charlotte Edwards, another ex-Head Chorister, sustained this role which means that for 4 of the past 5 years the head Chorister on the course has been a chorister from St. Oswald’s.  Abbi will also be singing with the Birmingham University Choir at the opening night of this year’s Promenade Concerts.

Adopt a Chorister

Our Adopt a Chorister Scheme to raise money to send the choristers to the Royal School of Church Music Summer School in Bath is now open for donations. The choristers receive a week of intensive vocal training from some of the country’s top choir trainers and sing the weekend services in the fabulous setting of Bath Abbey.  This year we have 9 choristers enrolled which means that, even taking advantage of an early bird booking at £375 per chorister we need to raise £3,375.

As we have said before, this is one of the key training events in our choir calendar and does much towards the high standard of singing which the choir regularly produces.  Forms are available in church or can be downloaded from the website.

Any donation, however small, will be gratefully received.

Trip to Lichfield

On Saturday 3rd June this year the Choir will sing Choral Evensong in Lichfield Cathedral. We shall be running a coach to Lichfield and anyone who would like to join us to enjoy an afternoon in our lovely cathedral city finishing with Evensong in the cathedral please sign up using the form by the south door

I understand that, for those who are interested, the Cathedral authorities will arrange a special ‘Hidden Places’ guided tour for us when you will be taken behind the scenes and shown parts of the cathedral not normally open to the public.

The cost for the coach trip will be £10 per person and I expect to leave Oswestry around 12 noon and return by 8.00pm.

The Veronica Donkin Memorial Organ Recital

The annual organ recital in memory of Veronica will be on Saturday 1st July at 7.30pm. This year it is being given by our own Organist, Gerry Howe. Gerry’s programme will have something to suit all tastes including music by Boellmann and, of course. J. S. Bach.

There is no charge for entry but a retiring collection will be taken to support the music at St. Oswald’s.

Do put the date in your diary and come along to remember Veronica Donkin, Joint Director of Music and Organist of this church from 2000 to 2014 and to have an enjoyable evening with Gerry at our wonderful Hill Organ.

Mike Donkin  -  Director of Music
