The Collect:  

Almighty Father whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory;  who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Readings: Exodus 24:12-end

High on a mountain, Moses receives from God the promised commandments. Clouds cover the glory of God, as when Jesus too meets God on a mountain top.

Second Reading 2 Peter 1:16-end

Peter writes about hearing God’s voice on the mountain top and speaks of the honour and glory given to Jesus by God, who calls him “my Son, the Beloved”.

Gospel Matthew 17:1-9

After all they have seen and heard up on the mountain, Peter, James and John are terrified.

Jesus calms them with a touch and they return to familiar ground forever
